There’s no better sound than birds singing on a fresh spring morning. Are you ready to bring those songs into your yard this year? As the snow melts and temperatures rise, we’re all ready to get outside in the fresh air – and so are our feathered friends! Many species have weathered the winter here and are emerging for the season, ready to find a perfect nesting spot. Other “snow birds” are returning from the south to reclaim their feeding stations (yes, the same birds come back year after year!) and find seasonal homes again.

Anyone with an active bird feeder will tell you that they’ve spent time and energy creating an environment where birds can survive and thrive, and they’re exactly right! With a little care, you can create a habitat birds will return to time and time again. Clean water and fresh seed are the two most important ingredients for a bird haven, but we also recommend birdhouses, bird baths, and other protections from predators or the elements.

Birdhouses make the perfect nesting place, so make sure yours is clean and ready for new occupants! Bright coloured houses attract the birds, and they also add a cute pop of colour to your yard! We offer some beautiful birdhouses on our site (link). If you’re not sure where to put your birdhouse, just look for an open space. Birds like to have a little room to see and hear what’s around them. For example, a fence post is great, but nestled in a bush is not ideal.

Bird baths can take many forms, from beautiful glass and ceramic creations to natural ponds and small creeks. If you choose a human-made option, just be mindful to keep things clean! Stagnant water must be replaced from time to time to keep the birds clean and happy.

Birds are pretty good at keeping themselves safe, but we can definitely help, too! In addition to providing them a nice home and good meals, we should always keep bird feeders out of the reach of neighbourhood cats and away from areas with tall shrubs that obstruct the view around them. Even choosing a proper feeder without blind spots will help the birds eat safely. We design all of our feeders with this in mind, using glass that will create minimal blind spots during meal time!

Spring is such an exciting time for all of us, and we hope you’ll make it extra special by feeding your local birds this year!
