Winter can be the busiest time of year for your bird feeder! Our feathered friends need constant fuel to combat the harsh elements during these months. We recommend black oil sunflower seed – the high oil content gives them the energy they need!

Here are a few things to keep in mind during the cold months:

  1. Simple, but important: remember to fill your feeders before they empty. Your feathered friends may speak up if they’re hungry!
  2. If you are experiencing lots of snow or precipitation, you may want to fill your feeder with less seed more often to ensure it stays as fresh as possible.
  3. Suet is a great addition to your seed feeder – it will bolster song birds’ fat intake to keep them warm and energy filled.
  4. Keep in mind that feeders should be kept out of high wind areas in the winter. This is why we love window mounted feeders!
  5. Don’t forget to use your bird houses! Even though it is not nesting season, birds often use birdhouses for roosting. Clean your birdhouses in early fall and put in a few clumps of dry meadow grass so they have a place to stay warm.
  6. If the weather alerts you that a storm is coming, stock your feeders so the birds can snack before they hide away.
  7. Be mindful of your feeder’s cleanliness. This is an important tip all year round! We recommend washing your feeders a minimum of twice a year or more if needed. Our glass feeders sterilize properly with hot dish soapy water and white vinegar.
The birds will appreciate any added effort to help them survive and thrive during the winter months, and you’ll get the pleasure of enjoying their daily visits!
