As we’ve traveled across Canada with our bird feeders over the years, we’ve found that many of you have the same questions – most frequently, these questions are about safely feeding the birds in your area. We love that you’re just as concerned about the birds’ well-being as we are. They bring a delightful, uplifting presence to our yards and we want to take good care of them. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 tips for safely feeding the birds you love to see! We’ll dive deeper into some of these tips in future blogs, too, so stay tuned.
1. Keep neighbourhood cats from preying on your feathered friends. (Meow-ouch!) By placing your bird feeders in areas that cats can’t reach, you’ll help the birds eat safely.
2. Stop window collisions. By placing visible items on your windows (like a Moore’s feeder!), you’ll help birds see the glass before they fly into it.
3. Steer clear of pesticides. There are many reasons why avoiding these chemicals is best, but protecting birds from toxins is at the top of our list!
4. Use fresh seed and high energy foods. As you learn more about the birds in your area, you can tailor their food choices to what’s best for them, both seasonally and for their specific species.
5. Clean your feeders. After all, no one likes eating from a dirty plate!
6. Create a bird-friendly habitat. You can design your yard to attract birds with shelter, vegetation, and more.
7. Add a bird bath. We all need a good soak from time to time, and your feathered friends will appreciate a nice spot to get clean!
8. Use bird houses. Bright colors like pink, orange, yellow, and white will be eye catching to the birds in your area.
9. Keep backyard animals out of your bird feeders. We’ve actually designed a feeder just for this purpose!
10. Do some seasonal research. Different seasons bring different needs for your area’s birds, and by learning what they need in each season, you can help them thrive.
We design our feeders for beauty and bird safety. The feeders will look gorgeous in your yard, and they’ll offer a safe place for birds to snack. If you’d like to spread the word, sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media. We’re also excited about our new referral program! When you refer a friend to us, you’ll both get a free perch with your next purchase – a “perch-ase”, if you will. We hope you love this program, and we can’t wait to add more bird nerds to our crew.
